“Silence isn’t empty, it’s full of answers”

April 4, 2017
Do you ever feel yourself filling the void? Have you been alone in the car and start dialing all of your friends and family, turning up the radio, doing anything to create the noise that will take you away from your thoughts?
This is actually really common. Many women find it difficult to drive and not speak at the same time to friends and family. Of course we cover it up with the very glamorous – ‘we can multitask’ but if we are honest with ourselves many of us are trying to fill the void…
Silence doesn’t always come with peace, harmony and bird chirping, For many of us silence can come with heart palpitations, debilitating thoughts of failure and regret and we can feel stuck, ashamed and unable to move forward. Have you ever felt like this?
The next time you experience this silence we want to offer you a new set of rules that really change your experience of being in your own company.
  1. Sit and lean into your feelings – this doesn’t mean you have to understand them all, feel them all or make sense of them all. Instead create an awareness of what is there – like a stocktake in a grocery story, for interests sake instead of need of solution.
  2. Be open to inspiration – you may be surprised at the thoughts that come when you allow them. Many times the silence is full of miraculous inspiration and genius that you have not been open to in the other wakeful hours. Sit quietly without expectation with a note pad and pen. Instead of needing to organize your thoughts and make sense of it all sit with curiosity. This is a wonderful place to birth new ideas and understandings about yourself and your life.
  3. Resist the urge to run – sure, what may come up may feel a little new or awkward but resist the urge to slam the door on your inspirations and thoughts. Remember when we sit in silence it doesn’t need to be with an agenda or with the expectation of having everything worked out. In many occasions being open to yourself is far more important than having everything boxed, catalogued and micromanaged in your life. Remind yourself that perfectionism is a delusion and true awareness comes from silence and being open to growth.
Watch your behavior this week and how you approach time alone. For most of us this is scary and daunting when we first start. However with practice, discipline and genuine curiosity you may learn to love and crave it. Taking time out every week to lean into things – feelings, thoughts, dreams, inspirations and things that may be troubling you is all part of the marvelous balance and diversity that is your life.
Becoming comfortable with your own silence and the process of receiving inspiration is a great way to combat stress, overwhelm and feelings of inadequacy.
